Move-In Day Masterclass: A 7-Point Los Angeles Move-In Cleaning Checklist to Secure Your Deposit (Inglewood & LA County)

Moving into a new home in Los Angeles County or Inglewood is exciting—but the first impression your space makes matters, especially when it comes to securing your security deposit. A thorough move-in clean not only helps you start on the right foot but also sets a foundation for healthier, happier living. At Deltas Mojo Cleaning Service, we’ve helped countless tenants and new homeowners get deposit-ready with efficient, apartment-friendly methods that respect your time and budget.

Why a Move-In Cleaning Checklist Matters

When you’re settling into a new place, you want to focus on unpacking, decorating, and making the space your own. A proactive move-in clean helps:

Meet or exceed landlord move-in requirements, reducing deposit disputes.
Eliminate dust, grime, and lingering odors from previous occupants.
Establish a clean baseline for your daily living and health.
Save time by tackling high-impact areas first—so you can enjoy your new home sooner.

Below is a practical, landlord-friendly 7-point checklist tailored for homes, apartments, and condos in LA County and Inglewood.

1) Kitchen: Target Surfaces, Appliances, and Odors

The kitchen is a common focus for deposits because tenants want to leave a space that feels fresh and ready for the next resident. Follow these steps:

Wipe all surfaces: wipe down countertops, backsplashes, and cabinet exteriors with a mild cleaner.
Cabinets and drawers: remove crumbs and wipe interiors where possible. Don’t forget the handles.
Sink and faucet: scrub the sink, faucet, and drain; check for leaks and remove any soap scum buildup.
Appliances: clean the inside of the microwave, wipe the exterior of the stove, and ensure the oven is free of grease residue. If the fridge was left on, a quick wipe of shelves and door seals helps with odors.
Odor control: place a small open box of baking soda in the fridge and pantry to neutralize smells.

Pro tip: Use a multi-surface spray for quick, efficient cleaning and save your energy for the rest of the home.

2) Bathrooms: Fresh, Sanitary, and Residue-Free

Bathrooms are a telltale area for landlords. A pristine bathroom communicates cleanliness and care.

Toilet: scrub the bowl, clean the exterior, and wipe the seat hinges. Finish with a fresh sealant if needed.
Shower/tub: remove soap scum, wipe glass doors or shower curtains, and rinse grout lines if present.
Vanities: wipe mirrors, countertops, and sink basins; check for mold in corners and vents.
Ventilation: dust or vacuum exhaust fans to prevent moisture buildup.

Sanitation tip: ensure any caulked areas are clean and intact; landlord inspections often check for mildew around seals and grout.

3) Living Areas: Floors, Surfaces, and Light Fixtures

Living spaces set the tone of daily life. Quick, thorough care goes a long way.

Floors: vacuum carpeted areas, sweep and mop hard floors, addressing high-traffic zones first.
Baseboards and corners: wipe to remove dust and accumulated dirt.
Light fixtures and switches: gently wipe to remove fingerprints and dust.
Windows and sills: remove smudges on lower panes and wipe sill dust.

Bonus: a clean, dust-free living room creates an immediate sense of freshness for new occupants.

4) Bedrooms: Dust-Free Comfort

Bedrooms should feel inviting and restful. A targeted approach yields noticeable results fast.

Closets and storage: wipe shelves and door interiors; remove any packing material remnants if left by previous occupants.
Ceilings and corners: quick dusting prevents cobweb accumulation.
Bedding areas: if possible, vacuum under beds and in closets to remove dust and allergens.

5) Kitchens (Deep Clean Focus): Floors and Appliances

For tenants wanting to exceed expectations, a deeper clean in the kitchen can be a decisive factor.

Flooring: Mop with a floor-safe cleaner; pay attention to corners and under appliances if accessible.
Drawers and cabinets: wipe interiors where you can access; organize items if needed.

If access is limited, prioritize visible areas and document what remains for the landlord notice.

6) Post-Cleanup Documentation: Photos and Notes

Documentation helps resolve disputes quickly and demonstrates your diligence.

Take before/after photos: especially of kitchens, bathrooms, and any damaged areas you’ve repaired or cleaned.
Create a simple checklist log: date, areas cleaned, and any issues you encountered.
Keep receipts: for any cleaning products you used that may be referenced by the landlord.

Sharing a concise summary with your landlord or property manager can smooth the deposit return process.

7) Final Touches: Odor Control and Freshness

A neutral, fresh scent signals a well-maintained space without masking odors with overpowering sprays.

Ventilate: open windows for a few minutes if possible to air out the space.
Neutral scents: choose light, clean scents or unscented products to avoid overpowering smells.
Air quality: consider a lightweight air purifier if you’ve got sensitive occupants or allergies.
