Post-Construction Cleanup Master Plan: A Room-by-Room Strategy to Make New Los Angeles Homes Move-In Ready

Building a dream home in Los Angeles, Inglewood, or the surrounding counties is exciting—until the dust settles. Post-construction cleanup is the crucial step that transforms a renovation or new build into a comfortable, move-in ready space. At Deltas Mojo Cleaning Service, we’ve honed a room-by-room master plan that tackles every particle of dust, debris, and lingering odors so you can enjoy your new home without the cleanup headache.

In this guide, you’ll find practical, actionable steps, trusted best practices, and smart product recommendations to make your new space shine. Ready for a cleaner, healthier move-in? Let’s dive in.

Why a Room-by-Room Plan Matters

New construction generates dust that can settle in every corner, from ceiling fans to HVAC ducts. A structured plan ensures nothing is missed, reduces rework, and shortens your overall timeline.

Prioritizes high-traffic and high-visibility areas first for immediate livability.
Prevents damage by using appropriate tools and safe cleaning methods on delicate surfaces.
Improves indoor air quality by addressing dust, volatile compounds, and residues from finishes.

Before You Start: Safety and Prep

Coordinate with your contractor for access, shut off water or electricity if needed, and declutter surfaces to maximize cleaning efficiency. Gather your cleaning supplies or opt for a professional team that uses proven, non-damaging products.

Key Tools and Products for Post-Construction Cleanup

Having the right kit makes all the difference. Consider these essentials, plus optional professional-grade tools we use at Deltas Mojo:

HEPA-filter vacuum with assortment of brush attachments
Microfiber dusting cloths and mop pads
Extenders for reach and ceiling corners
Soft scrub brushes for tile grout and stone
All-purpose cleaner, degreaser, and non-abrasive polish
Waste bags for construction debris and air-purifying deodorizers
Safety gear: masks, gloves, and eye protection

Room-by-Room Master Plan

1) Entryway and Living Spaces

These areas set the first impression. Start with the highest-visibility spots first.

Dust all surfaces from top to bottom: crown moldings, shelves, and window sills. Use microfiber cloths to trap fine particles.
Vacuum thoroughly, including upholstery and curtains. If linens are new, launder them before use to remove manufacturing residues.
Wipe down doors, frames, and light fixtures. Don’t forget switch plates and baseboards where dust accumulates.

2) Kitchen (New Build or Renovation)

The kitchen collects the most construction dust and oil residues. A meticulous approach pays off here.

Clean upper cabinets and vent hoods, then wipe the interior shelves to remove loose debris.
Wipe countertops, backsplashes, and appliance exteriors with a non-abrasive cleaner.
Clean the interior of the oven and refrigerator if installed; remove any packaging films from stainless steel appliances.
Polish sink basins and faucet fixtures; check for mineral residues on nuevos faucets.

3) Bathrooms

Bathrooms often require extra attention to ensure glare-free mirrors and sanitary surfaces.

Dust and wipe light fixtures, vents, and exhaust fans. Replace or clean filters as needed.
Clean tile grout with a non-acid cleaner to prevent discoloration from construction dust.
Disinfect toilets, sinks, and showers; rinse thoroughly to avoid soap scum and residue buildup.

4) Bedrooms and Closets

Keep bedrooms fresh and dust-free as you move in.

Dust all surfaces, shelves, and closet rods. Wipe doors and door frames.
Vacuum carpets or mop hard floors; consider a post-construction carpet cleaning if needed.
Ensure window treatments are cleaned and free of dust that can affect sleep quality.

5) Windows, Blinds, and Glass

New windows can accumulate fine dust and adhesive residues.

Wipe interior windows with a streak-free cleaner or a vinegar-water solution.
Dust and wipe blinds, then wash or lightly scrub harder-to-reach slats as needed.
Clean exterior glass if accessible and safe to reach.

6) Floors: Hardwood, Tile, and Carpeted Surfaces

Floor care varies by material; avoid damage and ensure longevity.

Hardwood: Dry sweep or vacuum with a soft brush. Follow with a damp microfiber mop using an approved wood-safe cleaner.
Tile/Vinyl: Thorough sweeping or vacuuming, then mopping with a gentle cleaner to remove grout dust and residues.
Carpet: Deep-clean with a hot water extraction or steam clean as recommended by the manufacturer. Consider pro-grade carpet cleaning for best results.

Special Considerations for Los Angeles Homes

LA-area homes may encounter unique dust and air quality challenges due to humidity fluctuations, vehicle exhaust on nearby streets, and seasonal allergens. Our team tailors cleaning methods to reduce fine dust intrusion and improve indoor air quality using HEPA filtration and careful sealing of work areas.

Move-In Ready Checklist: Quick Wins

Before you declare victory, run through this checklist to ensure nothing is left behind.

All surfaces dust-free with a light polish on wood and chrome highlights
Floors cleaned, swept, and mopped or vacuumed (carpets fresh and deodorized)
Kitchen appliances spotless, countertops gleaming, and sinks polished
Bathrooms sanitized with odor-free, residue-free finishes
Windows sparkling and blinds clean
Trash removed and recycling organized

Timeline and Coordination Tips

Coordinate with your construction team to stage work and minimize re-cleaning. A typical post-construction cleanup plan can follow this timeline:

Day 1: Large debris removal, ceiling-to-floor dusting, and rough vacuuming
Day 2: Deep cleaning of kitchens and bathrooms, windows, and fixtures
Day 3: Floor care (hard surfaces and carpets), final touch-ups, and move-in readiness check
