Seasonal Indoor Air Quality Upgrade: A Practical 5-Week Cleaning and Ventilation Plan for Los Angeles Homes

Living in Los Angeles means dealing with unique seasonal challenges—from pollen seasons and wildfire smoke to dry winter air and urban dust. A proactive indoor air quality (IAQ) plan doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This practical 5-week plan combines simple cleaning habits, smart ventilation, and a few product recommendations to create a healthier, more comfortable home. At Deltas Mojo Cleaning Service, we’ve helped countless LA families and businesses improve IAQ with reliable, professional methods. Let’s walk through a doable, step-by-step plan.

Why IAQ matters in Los Angeles homes

Reduced allergy and asthma symptoms with cleaner air and fewer irritants.
Improved sleep quality and overall well-being with better humidity and fewer contaminants.
Better ventilation helps control humidity, preventing mold growth in damp spaces.
Professional cleaning reduces microbial load on high-touch surfaces and HVAC components.

Week 1: Declutter, dust, and prep for cleaner air

Small changes yield big results. Start by clearing surfaces that trap dust and allergens.

Declutter common clutter hotspots (dresser tops, desks, and shelves) to reduce dust accumulation.
Dust with damp microfiber cloths to trap particles rather than scatter them.
Target high-dust zones: ceiling fans, vents, baseboards, and window sills.

Tip: If you have furry friends, groom them outside when possible and vacuum with a HEPA-filter equipped vacuum to capture pet dander.

Week 2: Airflow optimization and filtration basics

Improve ventilation and filter efficiency to move air more effectively through your home.

Check HVAC filters and replace them with pleated filters rated MERV 8–13 (depending on your system’s specs). Replace every 30–60 days or as needed.
Run exhaust fans in bathrooms and the kitchen for 15–20 minutes after use to remove moisture and odors.
Open interior doors to encourage cross-ventilation on mild days, especially in the evening when outdoor air quality improves.

Note: If wildfire smoke or heavy pollution levels are present, keep windows closed and use your HVAC system with a higher-quality filter and a recirculation mode if recommended by your unit’s manufacturer.

Week 3: Deep clean high-touch surfaces and soft furnishings

Target surfaces where germs and dust accumulate. This is the time for a deeper clean without overdoing it.

Clean and disinfect high-touch areas: doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, and countertops.
Wash or replace washable textiles: throw blankets, pillow covers, and slipcovers.
Vacuum upholstered furniture with a high-suction, HEPA-filter vacuum. Consider steam cleaning for deeply embedded odors or stains.

Pro tip: Use a fabric-safe disinfectant for textiles and let air dry fully to avoid moisture buildup that can invite mold.

Week 4: Humidity control and moisture management

Maintaining the right humidity level helps prevent mold growth and irritants from thriving.

Measure indoor humidity with a hygrometer. Aim for 40–60% humidity.
If humidity is high, use dehumidifiers in damp areas (basements, laundry rooms) and ensure proper drainage away from the home’s foundation.
Repair leaks promptly and inspect bathrooms and kitchens for hidden moisture spots under sinks or behind cabinets.

Tip: Keep houseplants to a manageable number; overwatering can increase mold risk in soil. Use saucers and good drainage.

Week 5: Seasonal air cleanup and maintenance plan

The final week consolidates gains and sets you up for ongoing IAQ success during LA’s varied seasons.

Schedule a professional cleaning to refresh HVAC components, ducts, and hard-to-reach areas. A periodic professional check helps remove accumulated dust and microbial growth that DIY cleaning might miss.
Replace HVAC filters again if needed and reset maintenance reminders for the next season.
Create a simple weekly IAQ routine: light dusting, quick declutter, and a 10–15 minute daily airflow check (open a window if outdoor air quality is good).

Practical tools and product ideas for better IAQ

Consider these options to support your cleaning and ventilation plan. Always follow manufacturer instructions and consult a professional if you’re unsure about your HVAC capabilities.

Microfiber cloths and mops for effective particle pickup without chemical overload.
HEPA-filter vacuums for floors, upholstery, and vehicles.
Pleated filters with appropriate MERV rating for your HVAC system.
Ventilation supplements such as portable air purifiers with HEPA filters for rooms with limited airflow.
Dehumidifier or humidifier depending on seasonal needs to maintain 40–60% RH.
