Shielding Your Home from Smoke and Allergens: A Practical Deep-Cleaning Plan for LA Homes During Wildfire Season

Living in Los Angeles means embracing sunny skies and vibrant neighborhoods—and it also means preparing for wildfire season. Smoke, ash, and outdoor allergens can infiltrate even well-sealed homes, impacting air quality and family health. At Deltas Mojo Cleaning Service, we’ve built a practical deep-cleaning plan that keeps your indoor spaces fresh, comfortable, and safer during wildfire events. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide you can follow or share with us for a professional deep-cleaning refresh.

Why wildfire season demands a targeted cleaning approach

Smoke particles are so tiny they can cling to surfaces, penetrate fabrics, and linger in HVAC systems. Regular cleaning isn’t enough during a wildfire event—you need a focused routine that addresses air filtration, surfaces, and textiles. Our plan integrates residential cleaning strategies with commercial-grade efficiency to protect you and your loved ones.

Pre-season prep: set the stage for cleaner indoor air

Start with these quick wins to reduce the indoor pollutant load before smoke becomes dense.

Seal and filter: Check HVAC filters; replace with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) or MERV 13 filters if compatible with your system. Clean or replace window and door seals to minimize drafts carrying particulates.
Create air barriers: Use door sweeps and weatherstripping on exterior doors. Close fireplace dampers when not in use to prevent outdoor smoke from entering through chimneys.
Pause exterior activities: Drying laundry outdoors or open windows can pull in smoke. If conditions worsen, switch to indoor-drying and keep windows closed.

Deep-cleaning plan: a practical, room-by-room approach

Follow this phased plan to remove existing ash, particulates, and allergens, while protecting surfaces from further contamination.

1) Entryway and living areas

Dust all surfaces with a microfiber cloth to trap particles rather than scatter them.
Vacuum carpets and rugs with a HEPA-filter-equipped vacuum. For hard floors, use a damp mop to pick up residual ash rather than dry sweeping, which can raise dust clouds.
Wipe down surfaces with a microfiber damp cloth using a mild, fragrance-free cleaner to avoid residue buildup on high-touch spots.

2) Bedrooms and textiles

Wash all bedding in hot water (130–140°F / 54–60°C) to kill dust mites and remove ash particles.
Run laundry on the highest spin setting to extract more water, then dry thoroughly to prevent musty odors.
Vacuum upholstered furniture with the wand attachment and consider removing cushion covers for washing if possible.
Replace or clean air bed covers and pillow protectors to reduce allergen exposure.

3) Kitchen and bathrooms

Deep-clean high-contact areas: door handles, light switches, faucet handles, and appliance handles.
Wipe down countertops with a residue-free cleaner to avoid attracting more dust on food-prep surfaces.
Clean the exhaust fans and grille covers to improve air circulation and reduce lingering odors.
Run the dishwasher and disposal with fresh water and a cleaning cycle to minimize any ash residue that might have entered drains.

4) HVAC system care

Replace filters as soon as possible after smoky conditions subside, and schedule regular filter changes during wildfire season.
Wipe down vent covers with a damp microfiber cloth to remove settled ash.
Consider a professional duct cleaning if your home has multiple occupants with allergies or if you notice reduced airflow.

Pro tips for effective air quality management

Air purifiers: Place HEPA air purifiers in main living areas and bedrooms to capture fine particles.
Ventilation strategy: When outdoor air quality improves (AQI in the good to moderate range), briefly ventilate by opening windows for a short duration, then close to retain clean air.
Humidity control: Maintain indoor humidity around 40–50% to discourage mold growth and keep dust settled.

Seasonal routines to sustain a healthier home

Integrate a lightweight weekly routine during wildfire season to maintain air quality without overwhelming your schedule.

Weekly: Quick wipe-down of high-touch surfaces, vacuuming or mopping floors, and washing 1–2 loads of laundry.
Monthly: Full textiles refresh (curtains, throw blankets), deep-clean carpets or area rugs, and wash HVAC vent covers.
Quarterly: Schedule a professional post-season deep-clean and an HVAC inspection to optimize filtration and airflow.
